A resident of the Melrose Houses for 47 years says she feels like it has been raining in her apartment for the past few days.  

“To be completely honest, I’m mortified and anxious,” said Belgica Orellana, who came to New York City from Ecuador nearly five decades ago.  

Orellana says she has been dealing with the flooding since Sept. 25, and has had water leak problems in her apartment for three years, filing many tickets with the New York City Housing Authority.  

But it wasn’t until this past stretch of time that the leaks became uncontrollable, forcing her to put buckets and towels across her home to slow the seemingly never-ending flow of water into her apartment.

Orellana told News 12 that she was worried a fire would start due to the amount of water pouring into her apartment.  She prepared a bag with all of her important documents in case she’s forced to quickly flee her apartment for any reason.  

NYCHA said in a statement, “The leaks affecting this apartment were caused by a broken floor flange in an adjoining apartment. NYCHA plumbers have been dispatched to make the necessary repairs this afternoon.”
