The Department of Correction rushed an inmate to the hospital after they tried to escape custody.
The inmate reportedly fled from the Vernon C Bain Center, also known as “The Boat” – a jail barge docked off of Hunts Point in the East River right across from Rikers Island.
Emergency response vessels were spotted in the waters just before noon on Tuesday. A Department of Correction spokesperson told News 12 that a person in custody jumped the fence of a rec yard and went into the river.
The DOC says the individual was apprehended and taken to the hospital, but no other information regarding the detainee is available at this time.
