An initial report from the Office of Inspector General says
the suspect who killed two Bristol police officers and wounded a third fired
more than 80 rounds during an ambush attack.
It also said the use of deadly force from Officer Alec
Iurato, who was shot in the leg, was justified.
According to the report, t
hree Bristol police officers responded
to a 911 call believed to have been made by the suspect Nicholas Brutcher. When
officers arrived, they went to the side door of the home and spoke with
Nicholas' brother, Nathan Brutcher.

As they ordered Nathan to step out of the home and show his
hands, gunfire erupted. The report says Nicholas Brutcher fired shots from
behind Sgt. Dustin DeMonte, Officer Alex Hamzy, and Officer Iurato.
The inspector general’s office released a bodycam video
taken by Iurato that begins after the ambush attack. He is able to make his way
around the home and to the police cruiser. There, he fired one shot that killed
Nicholas Brutcher.
It’s still not clear where Nicolas was located when officers
arrived at the home. It’s also not clear how Nathan Brutcher was injured in the
shooting.
The bodycam footage from Hamzy and DeMonte will remain
confidential, according to the inspector general.
A funeral is set for Friday for Sgt. Dustin Demonte and Officer Alex Hamzy. The service will be held at Rentschler Field at Pratt & Whitney Stadium in East Hartford at 11 a.m.
