An Iona University junior and native Jamaican is hard at work in Yonkers collecting donations to send to those who are being impacted in her homeland in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
Elecia Wilson hasn't been getting much rest since the hurricane hit the island earlier this week. Melissa made landfall as a Category 5 hurricane, with winds of 185 mph.
The 25-year-old emigrated to the United States at the age of 8, but will never forget her first home and the people there who now need her help.
"I bought some hygiene items, paper towels, oil which is very essential right now. These are going to Kingston, Manchester, Montego Bay and any other parish that needs immediate assistance," she said.
Wilson says friends have been helping with packing and shipping health and food items.
She adds that her Go Fund Me page raised over $1,200 as of Saturday night.
Although she's a little tired, Wilson vows to keep going.
"Jamaica raised me and it poured into me, all of my childhood, so its only right that I pour back when its in need," she said.
Wilson says she plans to travel to Jamaica next month in hopes of further helping the rebuilding efforts on the island nation.
The Go Fund Me Page in her name titled "Help Jamaica Families Recover from Hurricane" is still seeking donations to purchase canned and packaged foods, personal health items, diapers and more.
