A retired Newark police detective got a second chance at life, thanks to a heart transplant.
Charles Upshaw received a new heart this spring. He was able to attend his son’s wedding just 23 days later.
"There's nothing in the world I wouldn't do for you. Like being here today. Even if I had to escape from the hospital, I was going to be here today,” Upshaw told his son at the wedding.
Upshaw underwent surgery at Newark Beth Israel Hospital under heart surgeon Dr. Margarita Camacho.
