A New York jury has convicted a former Linden police officer in a 2015 fatal drunken driving crash.

Pedro Abad was found guilty of aggravated vehicular homicide for the deaths of two men who were riding in his car when they crashed into a truck while traveling on the wrong side of the highway.

Prosecutors said that Abad was traveling at 73 mph during the crash. They say his blood alcohol content was 0.24 , three times the legal limit, after a night out in Staten Island. Two of his passengers, Joseph Rodriguez and Officer Frank Viggiano, died. Another Linden officer, Patrick Kudlac, was critically injured.

Abad’s defense attorney maintains that Abad was not intoxicated at the time of the crash. The attorney says that authorities did not properly obtain a blood sample from the former officer.

Abad was fired from the Linden police force after the crash.

Linden Police Chief Jonathan Parham released a statement after the verdict was announced.

“Frank and Joe were taken from us too soon, and while these proceedings may be behind us, there is no verdict that can take away the emptiness and pain we feel,” Parham said.

Abad could face up to 25 years in prison when he is sentenced.
