It's the last call for a popular Bronx food cart. Fauzia's Heavenly Delights in Concourse Village will serve its last plate this Friday.
The hum of the generator is a soothing sound for Fauzia Aminah-Rasheed. It's the sound that fuels her family's food cart.
"It's like a lullaby because when I was young, I would be sleeping right next to this thing," said Aminah-Rasheed.
Her parents first parked the eatery on the corner of 161st Street and Concourse Village West in 1994.
It's become a lunchtime craving for courthouse workers and anyone passing by for the last three decades. Her mother, Fauzia Abdur-Rahman left her corporate job working for the Department of Health to be an entrepreneur alongside her husband.
Abdur-Rahman, who is from Kingston, Jamacia, designed a menu inspired by her mothers' cooking, fusing it with New York street halal food. Signature dishes include a jerk chicken gyro and curry chicken gyro.
"I tried my best to give the people or feed the people, like how I feed my family, and you know, this is like my fourth child, really," said Fauzia Abdur-Rahman, founder of Fauzia's Heavenly Delights.
The popular creations were overwhelmingly successful with a line that fills the block during lunchtime daily. Her daughter, Aminah-Rasheed took over the business in 2023, driving social media success and food reviewers from across the city.
"It just it feels so much more than just serving someone a plate of jerk chicken, you know, It's just it surpasses that tremendously. You really feel a sense of comfort and a sense of just familiarity with a lot of with a lot of these people. So sometimes I don't even like to call them customers. You know, because they feel like friends," said Aminah-Rasheed.
After a successful 31 years, Fauzia's will shut off the generator for good, serving their last plate on March 7.
"My daughter took over and she wants to move onto something else, I mean I'm 67 and my husband is 77 and I think it's time for us to enjoy what's rest of our lives, like everything else, there's a beginning and there's an end and you have to know when to say it's time. You have to know. And I think I just think it's time.," said Abdur-Rahman.
While the food cart says goodbye to the Bronx, Fauzia's will continue to offer catering services and sell their jerk seasonings online. They will also be popping up this summer at the Governors Island Food Court on Saturdays and Sundays from mid-May through October.
