The "Learn-To-Swim" program, funded by New York State Parks, kicked off Monday morning.
The program consists of three 10-day sessions at the Roberto Clemente Park Pool through the end of the summer.
The 45-minute sessions include one-on-one training and group activities for children ages 6 through 12.
"They're taking this first step towards a lifetime skill," said Randy Simons, commissioner pro tem and chief of staff at the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
Organizers say the first day of the session focused on evaluating the children.
The students practiced holding their breath underwater, treading water, floating and more.
Representatives from NYS Parks said the program is all about fun and safety.
"Drownings are the leading cause of death among the youth population. We're doing our part to combat that," said Simons.
Three sessions for this summer are completely booked. Those still interested can place their name on a waitlist or wait to sign up next summer.
