A local bus company was awarded as being the "best business" for moving the most vulnerable children across The Bronx.
GVC LTD has prided itself in being a safe company parents can count on to get the job done for more than 30 years.
With more than 200 gas buses in its fleet, GVC transports about 2,000 special needs kindergarteners and pre-K students to school daily.
Driver Judy Haul says when the engine starts, it's all about safety for the kids.
“I don’t want no accidents,” said the driver with more than 25 years of experience. “I’m always focusing on the road— half the time I don't hear nobody talking."
With special car seats fit to meet the safety needs of these students, New York state’s Department of Transportation gave the company a 98% safety rating, a stat owner Mike Lavallie believes is thanks to GVC’s focus.
“There is nothing more valuable than a child,” he said. “Especially with special needs.”
Safely transporting our Burroughs “special cargo,” as Lavallie puts it, has earned quite the reputation to the local community. The Bronx Chamber of Commerce has awarded GVC "business of the year” for the second year in a row.
“When people in the area see a GVC bus, they know their kids are safe,” he told News 12.
GVC is also looking for new ways to promote safety— even outside the bus. In the coming weeks, the Westchester Square warehouse will add more than 40 electric buses to its fleet.
The move comes in accordance with state law banning the purchase of gas buses by 2027. The same law mandates zero-emission buses by 2035.
Gas or electric, Haul says her focus will never change.
“The job is always for the babies,” she said. “Getting them there and back safely.”
While GVC installs electric bus charges over the next few years, it has also purchased about 30 gas buses to ensure there is no delay in service.
