Community leaders gathered in the West Bronx on Friday to celebrate the end of construction along a corridor of the Grand Concourse.
The corridor, which runs from East 175th Street to Fordham Road now has traffic signals, more trees and shade, and separated bike lanes.
“We know this project really had a vision…. We are trying to keep New Yorkers safe, we are trying to keep them healthy. We are making sure that at the end of the day, everyone is safe in our community,” said Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson.
This was the fourth phase of construction, which started in 2020. The Department of Transportation says these changes are proven to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities.
Phase five on construction will focus on East Fordham Road up to East 198th Street starting in 2024.
