A museum honoring a fallen hero from Patchogue and his comrades is set to have its grand opening.
The LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum in West Sayville -- the first military museum of its kind in the Northeast – is opening on Tuesday.
The 10,000-square-foot museum will be dedicated to telling the story of the history of the Navy SEALS. It will also house a training facility for U.S. Naval Sea Cadets.
“It's not a Michael Murphy museum, it's a Navy SEAL museum, that's the difference,” said Daniel Murphy, Michael’s father.
The museum was scheduled to be completed in 2021 but COVID-19 delayed construction.
Workers persevered through the pandemic -- and day-by-day the tribute to Navy Special Warfare Operators took shape.
“It's not open yet but I think everybody's excited,” added Maureen Murphy, Michael’s mother. “They said we like what you're doing, you're keeping his memory alive.”
Five years after the groundbreaking, the museum is ready to be open to the public. The grand opening ceremony will be held Tuesday. Notable guests attending include VIP military officers, Navy SEALS and a videotaped speech by former President George W. Bush.
