Commuters said they are fed up with constant traffic at the intersection of Bronx Park East and Allerton Avenue.
"It's just not a great way to start the start the morning... a lot of honking, a lot of yelling," said Gene DeFrancis, founder of the Allerton International Merchants Association.
Drivers told News 12 their daily commutes triple when they're forced to drive through the intersection.
"This should be a five-minute trip, normally," said one driver. "Since I've been in the Bronx it's now about 45 minutes."
News 12 crews witnessed traffic at a gridlock during the morning rush hour. Traffic spill onto the Mosholu Parkway, the Bronx River Parkway and Southern Boulevard.
"It is very, very, very congested over here in the mornings, especially school mornings," said one driver.
They said this is a yearslong issue.
Community advocates said the city's Department of Transportation responded, before the COVID pandemic hit in 2020, by adjusting the traffic light times. They said the NYPD also stationed traffic agents at the intersection. They said both solutions alleviated some of the congestion.
"Then in the colder weather, they started showing up less and less," said DeFrancis.
"They didn't have the manpower... and then COVID hit and then everything went bananas," said Larry Mauriello, President of the Allerton International Merchants Association.
Advocates said the traffic went back to normal. They are calling on the city to take action.
News 12 reached out to the NYPD regarding stationing traffic agents at the commuter hot spot.
It sent a statement saying, "The Commanding Officer of the 49 Precinct is aware of congestion at the intersection of Allerton Avenue and Bronx Park East. They will reassess traffic conditions at the location to determine the need for additional resources."
News 12 also reached out to DOT for comment, which said it is looking into the matter.
