A Bronx judge sentenced a man Monday to 25 years to life in prison for killing his own mother, dismembering her body and dumping her remains across several Bronx blocks in 2013.
A jury had found Bahsid McLean guilty in October of killing his mother, Tanya Byrd.
Investigators say McLean killed her after an argument, then snapped a photo of himself holding her severed head up like a trophy before scattering the rest of her body parts in garbage bags along curbs in Morrisania.
During the sentencing, McLean told the court that he hasn't been able to sleep at night since killing his mother. The judge called him a "psychopath."
McLean's lawyer argued that her client was exposed to crack prior to birth and was diagnosed with his first mental disorder at age 6. She said he had been in and out of institutions since the age of 4 and tried to prove that he was insane.
Byrd's family say McLean has long led a troubled life, and they accuse him of once attempting to burn his grandfather's house down.
