Jose Gonzalez was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the killing EMT worker Yadira Arroyo on Wednesday.
Gonzalez, 31, was found guilty last month of first-degree murder for killing Arroyo six years ago.
"Today's sentencing brings some closure after waiting six long years," said Arroyo's son Justin Robles.
Back in March 2017, Gonzalez hijacked Arroyo's ambulance while she was on duty and ran her over with her own vehicle twice. Gonzales was found to be high on PCP at the time of the incident.
Before the sentence was handed down, Gonzales asked Arroyo's family to forgive him, saying he didn't mean to kill the mother of five.
"My daughter was a beautiful human being and she didn't deserve to die the way she died," added Arroyo's mother. "I feel that they were just empty words and I hope that while he is in prison he can find higher power and mean the words that he said."
Gonzalez's lawyer says he will appeal his client's life sentence.
