A Monmouth County man will honor the lives lost in the Sept. 11 attacks and those who served the United States as a result afterward by walking from Holmdel to the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City.
Donald Aquilano will walk from Holmdel City Hall to lower Manhattan. He will be selling T-Shirts as well to raise money for the 9/11 Memorial and Unbroken Warriors, a combat veterans charity.
“Help those who help us. Fire, police and military. They take care of us every day,” Aquilano says.
Aquilano’s father will be accompanying him on the trek, riding behind him in a truck.
“My dad is a retired Jersey City firefighter, but he spent 30 days at Ground Zero cleaning up right afterward,” he says.
Aquilano will make the 50-mile walk through the night, arriving at the memorial by daybreak. He says that he plans on walking along Route 35 and then Route 1&9 all the way to Jersey City. He says that he will get a ride through the tunnel into Manhattan, and then will be back on foot.
This is the second year that Aquilano has done this walk.
