Man turns himself in for role in Starlight Park cellphone robbery that turned fatal shooting

Police say a man turned himself in for his role in a Starlight Park fatal shooting that began as a random cellphone robbery.

Police walked 19-year-old Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo out of the 43rd Precinct Monday night. The NYPD says Lopez Castillo allegedly acted alongside 20-year-old Axel Martinez, who is accused of firing the fatal shot.

Ronell Marte, 26, died after being shot in the chest just before 3 a.m. on Sept. 4. Police say Marte did not know his assailants.

Martinez was arrested on Sept. 18 and is charged with murder. News 12 reached out to the NYPD for his complete list of charges and is awaiting a response.

Police say Lopez Castillo is charged with murder, manslaughter, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.

News 12 spoke with Marte’s family, who said the victim had autism. They told us he was determined - getting an associate’s degree and a job all by himself. His sister said Marte was on his way home from work, taking his usual route through Starlight Park when he was shot.
