A man and a woman were caught on camera stealing from a Bronx pizzeria's donation jar, police say.
The incident happened Aug. 10 around 9 p.m. at Tiny's Pizza & Pasta on Grant Avenue.
Owner Tiny Sanchez says he entered the shop the next day and saw that the donation money container was missing. He says he scanned surveillance video and saw a man and woman walk outside after ordering a slice, whisper to each other, and then come back inside.
The video shows the man lean over the counter with money in his hand as if to order something else, but he instead takes the cash container and passes it to the woman. A few minutes later, she walks out with the container under her coat.
Sanchez says police officers were actually in the shop ordering food right before the theft occurred. He says it was a busy night at the pizzeria and calls the act disgraceful.
"It angered me because something like that should not happen here, especially when the money is for needy children," Sanchez says. "I hope they are caught as soon as possible."
The container had more than $200 in it, according to Sanchez, who adds that it was specifically intended for a child with a rare bone disease. A man from a nonprofit group comes to collect the money on a certain day each month.
Sanchez says the container also had a picture of the boy and a sticker on it with information about the nonprofit, which raises money for research and care for sick children.
Going forward, Sanchez says he plans on keeping the donation jar behind the counter and will put up a sign explaining to customers that they can donate if they wish.
