Some parents of Marine Park I.S. 278 students want to have the principal removed.
A petition on Change.org to remove Principal Kerri Moser now has more than 1,000 signatures.
This past academic year was Moser's first at the school.
Parents say they are concerned over the safety of the students and teachers after seeing videos on social media of fights happening inside the school.
"The principal has been lax in responding to the safety issues. There's constant fights in the hallways," says parent Jeanne Costello.
"My son probably witnesses an incident maybe once a week within the school of some kind of disruption," says Howard Carswell.
Parents who are calling for her removal also say Moser has stopped school events like fundraisers, dances and bake sales.
There some parents who do not fully agree with the petition. They say there is a reason behind the changes.
"Anytime you have a new change, a new boss, things get changed because they have to make things their own," says Tami Cherichetti. "In this particular case, she seemed to want to make them more compliant and in line with the chancellor's regulations."
The petition also says the principal has not properly handled academics during the pandemic. Some parents say their children have not had any virtual lessons.
Parents on the other side of the issue feel while there have been changes, the principal has not been in the position long enough to judge the changes.
In a statement, the Department of Education says, "District leadership is working with Principal Moser and the school community to collaboratively resolve issues in order to prepare J.H.S. 278 for a strong start to the school year in September. Parents play a critical role in advocating for our schools and we appreciate the engagement of this school community."
