Mayor Eric Adams is calling on Albany to pass legislation that his administration says will combat traffic violence in New York City. 

New York City’s Automated Enforcement Program on speed cameras is set to expire this year. Under the current law, speed cameras in the Automated Enforcement Program are only active Monday to Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Adams, along with administration officials, are calling on Albany to pass legislation that would allow the city to set speed limits and control the program. This would allow the city to have control over school zone speed cameras, red light cameras, bus lane enforcement and local speed limits.  

“When we operate speed cameras, we see a 72% reduction in speeding and a 14% reduction in injuries from traffic fatalities. Follow the numbers. The numbers are clear. And even in those intersections where we don't, we start to create a culture that people stop speeding,” said Adams.
