Delivery workers throughout New York City will soon have a place to take refuge during storms and charge up for their workdays.
Mayor Eric Adams and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that the city will use existing infrastructure, such as vacant city newsstands, to create “Street Deliveristas Hubs” – spaces where delivery workers can seek shelter from the elements and charge their electronic bikes and cellphones.
According to the city, funding is coming from a $1 million federal grant “secured by Senate Majority Leader Schumer in the upcoming appropriations bill for Workers Justice Project/Los Deliveristas Unidos.
This is just one of the many initiatives the city is taking to protect delivery workers including the millions placed into protecting bikes lines.
There are more than 65,000 delivery workers in the five boroughs.
