A legislative package passed by the New York City Council is aiming to improve practices within the city's fire department.

It addresses what officials are calling a historic lack of racial and gender diversity within the department. A total of five bills were signed by Mayor Eric Adams on Monday.

The legislation requires the FDNY to develop a plan to survey firehouses and ensure they are equipped to serve a mixed gender workforce. It also lists an increased transparency on the demographics of members in a firehouse through public reporting.

Elected officials say this is just one step forward in building a more inclusive and stronger department serving communities across the boroughs.

Mayor Adams also stressed the city's frontline heroes should reflect the communities that they serve.
