Mayor Bill de Blasio says the city will keep monitoring COVID-19 data to determine whether to move forward with plans to have a fully vaccinated crowd attend the New Year's Eve celebration at Times Square.

De Blasio said Thursday that plans for the celebration are still going forward but added that the city will make changes if necessary.

"We're going to make that decision based on the data and the science," de Blasio said. "We're going to watch very carefully. It's still, you know, more than two weeks away. And if at any point we need to alter the plan, we will."

The mayor cited that the event is outdoors and slated to be attended by fully vaccinated revelers.

"I'm also comfortable at this hour of this day that, because it is an event where people are fully vaccinated and all outdoors, right now, that's something we're going forward with," de Blasio added.

Last year, the pandemic forced the cancellation of the annual celebration at Times Square.
