Mayor de Blasio says COVID-19 vaccine required for all new city employees
Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio both delivered COVID-19 updates Monday morning following the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's recommendation of local governments bringing back an indoor mask mandate.
Cuomo made several recommendations, but only one mandate. As of Monday, all employees of the MTA and Port Authority must either get the vaccine or submit to weekly COVID tests. This goes into effect on Labor Day.
Cuomo also made several suggestions. He's asking local governments follow the CDC's guidelines as well as asking private businesses to enforcce vaccine-only admission. The governor also recommends mandatory vaccinations for high-risk public facing people such as state hospital workers and public hospitals make the vaccine mandatory for employees. The governor says it's time to watch the numbers.
De Blasio declared every new city employee hired must show proof of vaccination. As far as masks, the mayor also did not issue a mandate, but also made recommendations. He believes vaccinations remain the key to beating the virus, so he says the city is launching a $1.3 million back-to-school campaign to encourage vaccinations for children 12 and over.
The state will be opening additional vaccination sites for state workers as well.
