New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced a proposed $88.1 billion budget this morning with cuts to several areas, including $1 billion in cuts to the NYPD.
The budget is down from $95.3 billion due to deep cuts to city agencies.
The mayor says there will be $1 billion in cuts and reduced expenses for the NYPD, while maintaining patrol strength and keeping city streets safe.
The cut will include reduced spending, canceling the July class, major overtime reductions and reducing contracts and non-personnel expenses.
There will also be a transfer of responsibilities out of the NYPD, including crossing guards and homeless engagement units.
Despite the proposed $1 billion in cuts to the NYPD, de Blasio says patrol strength will be maintained.
Approximately $430 million in cuts from NYPD will be reinvested into different parts of the city. This will include $115 million for summer youth programming, $116 million for education and $134 million for family and social services.
Nearly $537 million in capital will be shifted from NYPD. The mayor says $450 million for NYCHA and Parks Department youth recreation centers and $87 million for NYCHA Broadband expansion.
Other values in the budget include $37.5 million for NYC Care, which will expand to Manhattan and Queens and guarantees health care in every borough.
Another $113 million for specialized COVID-19 clinics for hard-hit communities. Three new specialized community clinics will open in Bushwick, Jackson Heights and Tremont to treat lasting effects.
The budget also includes $450 million in the 2020 and 2021 fiscal years for GetFoodNYC to ensure no New Yorker goes hungry
In addition to the budget, the mayor addressed the 2020 graduates in NYC ahead of the city’s live telecast.
