The Melrose Houses received a much-needed revamp to its safety measures with the installation of brand-new security cameras.
This comes after Council member Rafael Salamanca received funding for the cameras back in 2018. He says that tenants told him about the building’s issues with crime and other safety problems in 2017, and was able to get $3 million from the following year’s budget for new lights, cameras, and roof and door repairs.
“One of my frustrations has been the delays in getting things done for my NYCHA residents. It took years and years of asking, of screaming, of bringing it up in hearings, of bringing it up in the press,” said Salamanca.
Salamanca called out the New York City Housing Authority in 2022 for not implementing the new safety measures sooner.
