The Day of the Dead is a Mexican tradition that dates back centuries. The celebration honors those souls that have passed away and it's believed during that week of celebrations those souls come back to visit their family members.
Objects are an essential part of the tradition to build an altar for the dead. An altar consists of a picture, skeleton figures, bread and the deceased's favorite food. La Sirena is a Mexican folk art store in Manhattan home to hundreds of handmade pieces by artisans from all over Mexico.
As the Day of the Dead approaches, owner Dina shows us art pieces used for El Día De Los Muertos. News 12 reporter Joanna Hernandez visited the shop to learn more about the meanings of those objects.
La Sirena is located at 27 E. Third St., New York, NY 10003.
