A Middle Island couple whose condo was destroyed in a fire days before their wedding is still on the difficult road of rebuilding their home months later.
Amanda Cappiello and her then fiancé lost their condo and everything in it after a fire in April of last year, just five days before their wedding.
“It was very chaotic because we weren't expecting it and we already had so much going on, with people visiting and last payments, ” she says.
After hearing about the devastating loss, a group called the Brides of Long Island rallied together to donate money to a GoFundMe page set up for Amanda and Nick Cappiello. The group also donated much more.
“They were able to bring in things for our wedding, for our rehearsal, dinner services,” Amanda Cappiello says.
Nearly eight months later, the couple is currently paying rent for an apartment and continues to pay mortgage and HOA payments for a home that's still in ruins.
Amanda Cappiello says they've been told very little from the property management and the town.
“I understand it doesn't take two weeks to tear down the building, but it's disheartening when you drive past the building and it still looks like it burned down yesterday,” she says.
Amanda Cappiello adds that they still don’t know what caused the fire even after they requested a report in May
“It's not their homes and their livelihood that's on the line, so who holds these property managers accountable?” she says.
Amanda Cappiello and her husband continue to pay for their damaged property and rent another home in the meantime.
