A group of migrants who were being housed illegally inside of a commercial store have been asked to vacate the premises and relocate.

The migrants were staying at 305 East Kingsbridge Road. One former resident spoke with News 12, saying he lived in the store with his brothers and that they each paid $300 a month for a bed and three meals a day.

Gates to the location were shut on Wednesday night after an inspection done by the Department of Buildings.

The DOB says that one of the stores in the building had been illegally converted into sleeping quarters with 34 beds on the first floor and 11 beds in the cellar. Extension cords, e-bikes, space heaters, and hot plates were scattered throughout the building on both floors, according to officials.

One former resident says the owner was just trying to help them and that prior to finding this living arrangement, they were sleeping on trains and on the streets.

A vacate order has been issued for the location due to life-threatening conditions. Two violations have been issued to the landlord, and those residing there have been referred to the city’s Office of Emergency Management.
