Tenants at the Mitchel Houses on Alexander Avenue say there is a laundry list of problems that NYCHA will not fix.
The tenants rallied Tuesday to demand changes that they say are long overdue.
Gladys Maldonado, 62, says that water has been leaking from her bathroom ceiling for more than a month. She says NYCHA told her they fixed the root of the problem a few floors above, but so much water reached her apartment that an outlet began to spark and smoke.
Maldonado also say her heat does not work, her stove has issues and that her kitchen sink is also leaking.
"It's horrible. It's a disaster. I'm afraid to sleep at night. You don't know what could happen," she says. "We deserve to be treated like human beings because we pay our rent."
In a statement, NYCHA said it is working to improve workflow as part of a 10-year strategic plan, like a new app for tenants to put in work orders.
