Mitchel Houses still have no gas ahead of Thanksgiving

Nearly two months after a partial building collapse, 10 buildings that are part of NYCHA's Mitchel Houses still have no gas.
An explosion in the chimney caused an entire corner of the building to come crashing down on Oct. 1, now blue tarp sits over the exposed part of the building and residents are still dealing with the aftermath.
NYCHA gave residents a hot plate and a $15 gift card, but residents say that's not going to help them much.
One resident said, "Like what? What can we buy? If we wanted to buy a turkey, we couldn't buy a turkey with that. We can't even buy ham."
When News 12 asked a resident what their Thanksgiving plans were, they responded by saying, "It's just another day." "We can't use the stove or oven, so we can't make anything."
"For the holidays, this is looking really sad," said another resident.
When News 12 visited some buildings, our crews found a sign on the wall saying NYCHA has to replace all the gas lines in the building and when it comes to a timeline for the gas to be restored, it said "uncertain."
A spokesperson from NYCHA sent News 12 the following statement:
"Gas restoration work at Mitchel Houses is ongoing. Gas service interruptions and restoration work are a matter of public safety and involve multiple partners and steps, including shutting off service, making necessary repairs, inspections, and coordinating with service vendors, in order to safely restore service as quickly as possible."
