When was the last time you noticed the old church on your block, and started thinking about all of its history? A doctor at Montefiore is taking a trip down memory lane in the Bronx, and showing other healthcare professionals that there’s more to the area than meets the eye.
Over the last few months, Dr. David Herszenson has been taking Montefiore medical staff on walking tours throughout the Bronx.
"I realized just walking around and looking at buildings, there's a lot of history here! The people, the buildings, the neighborhoods,” he said.
Herszenson has always been a history buff, and has worked in the Bronx since 2008. The borough’s deep history inspired him to learn more.
"At one of my sites, I had practiced there for 10 years without really knowing about what had gone on before I ever set foot in the area,” said Herszenson.
He says learning the history of a community makes medical professionals more equipped to serve them. Staff members say the tour can bridge the cap from patient to doctor.
"The important part is actually going to the community and figuring out what their needs are, because it's different for each community, and then adapting to their needs,” said pediatrics resident Camilo Pardo.
Herszenson hopes to see more parts of the Bronx become official landmarks, protecting them from ever being torn down.
