Hundreds of cars and residents took to the streets of Morris Park, speaking out against a plan to house inmates from Rikers Island in their community who suffer from illnesses. 

Those in attendance are demanding answers from New York Health + Hospitals/Jacobi about the proposed housing units. The rally drove through the hospital’s parking lot, holding signs, beeping horns, and saying they don’t want inmates in their neighborhoods.  

Many of the residents present say they hold sympathy for the inmates and believe they should be treated, just not in their neighborhood.  

Ralliers made their way to the office of Assemblywoman Nathalia Fernandez, and plan to make their way over to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s rally in the area, where they say they plan to confront her about the potential new development.

The Fortune Society, developer of the proposed site, and New York City Health + Hospitals have said that this development would help bring much-needed medical care to a vulnerable population.
