A school in Morrisania hosted an event filled with activities and breakdancing Saturday that inspired kids to become educators.

Windows of Hip Hop, along with New York City Men Teach brought families across the Bronx at C.S. 55 as part of this year's Bronx Week.

Hip hop pioneers Grandmaster Melle Mel and Grandmaster Caz hosted the event.

Graffiti Workshops by Bronx artist Kay Love and breakdancing were also among the many activities that aimed at raising awareness of their mission of engaging and recruiting men of color in New York City to become teachers.

"We just really feel like the way that you can reach kids, you utilize the tools you have, and so whether that's hip hop, or whether it's making sure kids see faces in the classroom that look like them and relate to them culturally, we both feel it's really important," said Nicole Perrino, of Windows of Hip Hop.

Residents said events like these show the community that people are willing to show up and make a difference.

"This event is very important to the culture because it's universal, it's community, it's love, peace and a lot of fun," said resident Jennifer Acosta.

The initiative aims to show children that their teachers not only resemble their community, but that they are open to creative ways to keep them interested in learning.
