The Mott Haven Bar and Grill is reflecting on the changes it has undergone since Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
Rosa Garcia was a manager at Bruckner Bar and Grill, the restaurant's former name. It sits at 1 Bruckner Boulevard, right under the Third Avenue Bridge. Torrential rain from Sandy flooded the streets of the South Bronx and the restaurant itself.
"It took a day, at least, for the plumber to get all the water out," Garcia says. "But then we had a really bad smell due to all the food and oil and everything."
There was no time to be overwhelmed by the damage, Garcia says, as they "weren't prepared...I didn't think it would hit as hard as it did. It took this place three months just to get power."
Thousands of dollars in rebuilding and 13 months later, the restaurant reopened as the Mott Haven Bar and Grill, with Garcia as owner.
A superstorm could not bring down the restaurant, and Garcia says she's ready for the future.
