Subway fires are not the first thing on a commuter's mind, but it can definitely cause delays.
The MTA reported a total of 55 fires throughout the system in July 2024. Back in May 2023, a box truck caused major delays after it was engulfed in flames, right below the East 180th Street subway station tracks.
The MTA reported 43 fires at the station from June 2019 through June 2024.
"Dealing with track fires, I haven't forgotten how what a big impact that was having on our ability to run the system safely and reliably. So this is a significant initiative," said an MTA official during the MTA's committee briefing last month.
Some of the MTA's improvements include targeted cleaning and trash service during holiday events and at high-volume stations.
The MTA says most of the subway fires reported are caused by trash and debris.
