Starting Monday, the MTA will be fining anyone who refuses to wear a mask while traveling on their buses, subways or trains.
The fine will cost people $50.
The MTA says that more than 90% of customers already wear face coverings, but they want to see that number go even higher.
MTA Chairman and CEO Pat Foye says that health experts agree that wearing a mask is the single most important thing people can do to stop the spread of coronavirus.
The NYPD, MTA police and bridge and tunnel officials will be enforcing the new fine.
Transit workers say they have been pushing for the fine to ensure their safety.
