History is being recognized and preserved in the Bronx, as the Landmark Preservation Committee has voted to designate multiple sites in the borough as landmarks.

The Bronx Opera House is one of the newest landmarks in the city. It was built between 1912 and 1913, serving as an entertainment center for nearly 50 years, hosting early Broadway acts and becoming a major center for the city’s growing Latin music scene.

In 2012, the Bronx Opera House was converted into the Opera House Hotel, and commissioners from the committee say they aren’t just giving the landmark its designation for its architecture, but also for its cultural significance in Latin music in New York City.

The Landmark Preservation Committee also designated a firehouse in Belmont, Engine Company 88/Ladder Company 38, as a landmark. Joining the firehouse is the Fire Alarm Telegraph Bureau’s Bronx office, located on East 180th Street.
