A suspect wanted in connection with a triple shooting in Hempstead that killed a teen and wounded two more college students is in police custody, Nassau County police confirm.
The department said it will hold a press briefing with an update on the homicide investigation later this morning. So far, police have not released specific details about who the suspect is or how they made the arrest.
On Saturday, Nov. 22, just before 11 p.m., Nassau County police rushed to the intersection of Willow and Kennedy Avenues in Hempstead after a shot spotter notification went off.
At the scene, first responders found three people with gunshot wounds.
Two of them were 20-year-old students from Nassau Community College. The unnamed victims were taken to the hospital, where they were treated and released.
McCleod was a sophomore at
Monroe University in The Bronx and was from Queens. She was a member of the women's college basketball program and was studying business, according to her biography listed on the school's athletics website. She had dreams of opening up her own clothing and sneaker store.
The day after her death, the school released a statement that said in part: "The Monroe University community is devastated by the tragic loss of student Amira McCleod, a cherished member of our Express women’s basketball team. We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Amira’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved her."
Jerry Kornbluth, Vice President of Community & Governmental Relations at Nassau Community College, also released a statement that said in part: " Our thoughts are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence."
Last Tuesday, Nov. 25, the Nassau County Police Department issued a Crime Stoppers alert asking the public for any information to help them make an arrest.
Today's announcement will take place at Nassau County Police Headquarters in Mineola at 10 a.m.
