The Nature Center at Orchard Beach is finally back open to the public.
The city began reconstructing the center in 2018.
The center helps beachgoers take a break from the sun and the sand to appreciate the natural beauty of the surrounding area at Orchard Beach. Park ranger Adam Rodriguez is a Bronx native who is now helping fellow residents learn about the nature of the Long Island Sound, Orchard Beach and the trail at Hunter Island.
The project was completed thanks to over $2 million in funding that went towards renovating the interior to catch the attention of those coming to the beach.
“I grew up in the southeast Bronx and my only experience of Orchard Beach was the beach," said Rodriguez. "When you're out in Hunter Island, you don't even feel like you're in New York City anymore.”
The center will be open through the end of the beach season on weekends from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will also offer year-round programs.
