A neighbor in Crown Heights captured video of a large gathering Tuesday night that shows people huddled in a backyard not following social distance recommendations.
The video shows a few people wearing masks in what appears to be a wedding celebration. It also shows people on a nearby roof waving flags.
The neighbor tells News 12 the music was so loud that the police from the nearby 71st Precinct eventually came and dispersed the crowd. The NYPD could not give specific details on neighborhoods or specific events, but tells News 12 it has been checking supermarkets, restaurants, bars, salons and public spaces. Officers remind people each time about congregating in public spaces.
In a message to constituents, Councilmember Chaim Deutsch says in part, "We'd all like life to return back to normal. And that will happen, but that could take weeks or months. And each time you disregard the order to stay home and conduct yourself in a safe manner, you're contributing to the elongation of this circumstance."
Police say they will continue to crack down on large crowds. The mayor also says people will now start to face fines for ignoring social distancing rules.
