Neighbors and colleagues of an NYPD officer slain in the line of duty early Wednesday morning gathered outside her Sedgwick Avenue home throughout the day to pay their respects.

Officers stood guard outside the residence for some time as police continued their investigation.

As News 12 has reported, Miosotis Familia, 48, was fatally shot in an ambush-style attack around 12:30 a.m. while sitting inside a police command vehicle at Morris Avenue and East 183rd Street.

Police say officers shot and killed the suspect, 34-year-old Alexander Bonds, who was on parole for a 2014 burglary in Syracuse. His criminal record included a half dozen other arrests.

Familia was a Bronx native and mother of three. She served in the NYPD for 12 years. She previously worked as a medical assistant with the American Red Cross and as a nurse at New York University Hospital, according to her LinkedIn profile.

"Officer Familia gave her life protecting a neighborhood plagued by gang violence," the Police Benevolent Association said in a statement after her death. "Fully knowing the dangers that she faced, she suited up in uniform every day and stood tall against those who threaten and terrorize the good folks of the Bronx."
