More than 100 Bronx residents are getting a new beginning in Bedford Park, as a long-awaited affordable housing complex officially opens its doors.
The Bedford Green House II, developed by Project Renewal, features 116 rent-stabilized apartments designed to help formerly homeless and rent-burdened families rebuild their lives.
For 59-year-old Carol Jones, the move represents much more than a new address.
After years of struggling with addiction and homelessness, she now calls her 12th-floor apartment a “second chance at life.” “Now I have my own keys — I can open up my door and go as I please on an everyday, good, healthy relationship with myself,” Jones said.
Jones says having her own kitchen has helped her feel stable for the first time in years.
“I used to run for my drug," she said. "Now I’m running towards whatever I gotta do to better my life."
Project Renewal CEO Eric Rosenbaum says the goal goes beyond housing — it’s about providing essential on-site "services that meet people where they are.”
Construction is already underway on a new medical center next to the complex that will serve both residents and the broader Bedford Park community.
As Jones prepares to take advantage of that new resource, she’s also focused on her next goal: earning her GED diploma.
“I’m not gonna let nothing hinder me this trip around,” she said.
