New York City’s new Dusk and Darkness initiative is looking to shine a light on pedestrian and bicyclist safety during what officials say is a dangerous time of year.
The NYPD and city officials will be focusing on education and enforcement of traffic laws. Officers will be stationed at high-traffic intersections across the five boroughs in an effort to remind drivers about the rules of the road. They will also run public service announcements created by city students.
The enforcement component is already underway and will continue into this weekend, particularly in the 18 precincts across the city where the most pedestrian crashes happen.
“Why do we concentrate on failure to yield to pedestrians? Because 68% of our pedestrian fatalities happen at intersections… it’s something we take very seriously,” said Philip Rivers, chief of transportation for the NYPD.
NYC Department of Transportation commissioner Ydanis Rodrigruez says that this year, pedestrian deaths are at the lowest they’ve ever been since the city began keeping track.
