A new affordable housing complex in Mott Haven has opened.

Yuco Management, Inc. broke ground on the Brook Avenue Apartments in 2012. The complex, a five-story building built on a once-contaminated and vacant lot on East 147th Street, is at about 80 percent occupancy.

There are a total of 55 units in the building: seven studio apartments, 35 one-bedroom units, 12 two-bedroom units and one three-bedroom apartment. Units feature granite countertops and real oak wood flooring. There's also a parking garage for tenants.

Those involved in the project say it's important for people living in the South Bronx to be able to afford their own neighborhood.

Yuco stresses the affordability of its newest project, telling News 12 that tenants will pay 30 percent of their income for rent. A portion of the units are for households earning up to 40 percent of the area's median income.
