Thrill-seekers will have a new reason to visit Luna Park in Coney Island next season.
Owner Alessandro Zamperla says the expansion will bring new rides and more to the park. He and several other community leaders broke ground on the site on Tuesday to celebrate the new attractions and pedestrian plaza that will be built.
Some of the attractions include the Super Flume ride and the J2SK coaster, as well as the Sky Chaser – a ropes course that will include zip lines.
Luna Park is also revamping three streets into pedestrian plazas that will have food, games and retail locations for attendees to enjoy.
Zamperla says the expansion was supposed to happen in 2020 but was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. He hopes the 2022 season will be extended to make up for lost time.
"We're actually trying to extend the season…to offer food, games, entertainment also in the colder months. So it's really a game-changer,” said Zamperla.
He says construction on the new expansion is expected to be finished by spring 2022.
