The Department of Transportation is addressing community concerns in Pelham Parkway and making changes to improve safety outside of a local school. Some people still question if it's enough.
Community members said the streets around P.S. 357 are dangerous and pushed for more safety measures. Residents say they've witnessed cars run stop signs and speed down the street.
In a letter to Community Board 11, the NYC Department of Transportation says Lydig and Barnes avenues, which surround P.S. 357, will be 15 mph.
This comes after the enactment of Sammy's Law, but people in the community say enforcement is necessary.
"It's not just about enforcing speed limits but preventing speeding that saves lives. Things like speed bumps or speed camera to prevent speeding." said Roxanne Delgado, founder of Friends of Pelham Parkway.
The DOT says by the end of this year, 250 locations across the city will see speed limits reduced to 15 mph. Residents say they hope these new changes will come with strong enforcement and safer streets.
News 12 was told the NYPD is responsible for enforcement.
A DOT spokesperson released the following statement to News 12:
“A driver's speed can mean the difference between life and death in a crash, so these speed limit reductions will help protect everyone who shares our streets. We will review any community requests for additional safety infrastructure.”
The DOT says people who want additional safety measures can reach out to Borough Commissioner Anthony Perez at 212-748-6680 or at NYC DOT - Contact DOT.
