The city is targeting about Brownsville and 32 other neighborhoods hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic to get more residents vaccinated. 

A new hub just opened at Teachers Preparatory High School in Brownsville and is administering nearly 500 shots each day. 

"Being able to get out into communities of particularly Black and brown communities and see hope seeing people excited about bringing the vaccine to their community after their communities have been so ravaged by the pandemic. It's really, really uplifting,” said Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Melanie Hartzog. 

The new site is run by Capsule Pharmacy.

“It has been a really rewarding process. I think it’s really hard to describe in words that feeling you get from seeing people so happy and walk out of here with sighs of relief and just joy. It is really the most amazing gift and they have really given us that gift and we feel really fortunate to just be here," said Capsule Chief Pharmacist Sonia Patel.

The Brownsville location is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

“In addition to us going out to homebound seniors and getting them vaccinated through the fire department, we also partnered with Curb so that seniors, who in fact are not eligible for Access-A-Ride or have no other means to get to the vaccine site, Curb can actually pick them up and bring them to the site get her vaccinated,” said Hartzog. 

Hartzog says that with more supply coming in, more people will have access to the vaccine.
