NYPD Chief of Patrol Fausto Pichardo abruptly announced his retirement on Tuesday, and now the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization is calling for him to withhold his resignation.
"Pichardo should not leave...The mayor should insist in Pichardo not to resign,” said Councilmember Ruben Diaz Sr.
Pichardo announced his resignation on Twitter Tuesday after reported tension with the mayor, which came as a shock to many in the community.
Diaz expressed concern about the lack of Hispanic leadership left in the NYPD and being able to bridge the gap with the community.
"Officer Pichardo is an example to our youth, an example to our community,” said Diaz.
City Councilman Fernando Cabrera spoke to News 12 on Wednesday saying high-ranking
Hispanic departures are becoming the norm in the NYPD, with two others unconfirmed--Chief of Transportation Nilda Hoffman and Inspector Veras.
"We’re not going to have not even one Latino in the upper brass of the NYPD and yet we have a city with 30% of our constituents are Latino,” said Cabrera.
Cabrera says Pichardo was a bridge-builder in the community, which will be difficult to replace.
"The people that could bring community and law enforcement together, he had that credit he built it up for the last 21 years,” said Cabrera.
Diaz also says that in a time of tension between police and the community, Pichardo is needed to unify the city.
News 12 reached out to the NYPD about the reported departures of Hoffman and Veras and has not heard back yet.
