Just one week after making history as the NYPD’s first-ever Latino commissioner, Edward Caban sat down with News 12’s Mary-Lyn Buckley to discuss what he hopes to accomplish.
Caban was born and raised in the Bronx and continues to call the borough his home. He started his career in the 40th Precinct and rose through the police ranks in his career.
The commissioner credits his father as a driving force in his journey to becoming the commissioner. Caban says his first order of business is to help New Yorkers feel safe.
“Last year, we put 1,000 officers into our subway systems, and now in 2023 we are down and overall crime in our city… is down 5%,” said Caban. “There are a lot of illegal guns on the street that are a priority for our men and women… to constantly make sure these guns are not in the hands of men and women that use them, and will keep on using them.”
