The Newtown Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday to keep two books in circulation at the Newtown High School Library after two months of back-and-forth.

The books "Flamer" and "Blankets" will be kept on shelves as long as the administration implements a policy to address concerns from students and/or parents or guardians.

The books deal with topics including sexual orientation, sex abuse, mental health and bullying.

Students came out Thursday night to show their opposition for the ban.

"I am here to ask you to follow through on that promise, to do better in the future," one student said.

Some say the books are too explicit for students and want them removed, while others say censoring students will bring far greater consequences.

The Board of Education lost two members since the last time they voted on whether to ban two books. Janet Kuzma and Jennifer Larkin resigned from their seats on the board amid the backlash of the book banning debate.

At the last meeting, which was less than a month ago, the board ended deadlocked in a 3-3 vote and were forced to reschedule to a special meeting, which was held Thursday.

News 12 attempted to speak with the Board of Education before the meeting but did not hear back.
